Why you’ll love this crispy sticky tofu recipe

Tofu has a reputation. Some call it bland, some call it squishy, and others (me) call it a blank canvas of endless plant-based possibility.

This recipe is my go-to when I want crispy tofu nuggets without oil, topped with a sticky sesame sauce that's sweet, tangy, spicy, and loaded with flavor.

This dish is:

  • Completely oil-free and baked (or air-fried if you’re fancy)
  • Coated in a homemade teriyaki sauce made with pantry staples
  • It’s better than any takeout you’ll find
  • Packed with plant-based protein
  • Great for meal prep (hello, airtight container!)
  • A hit with the whole family-even that one cousin who “doesn't do tofu”

Let's talk texture: Getting that crispy tofu right

The texture of the tofu is a big deal. I always use super firm or extra firm tofu for the crispest results. If your tofu isn't labeled “super firm,” give it a press using either a tofu press or the ol' layers of paper towels + heavy book trick. Removing the excess liquid is key-no one wants soggy tofu.

I prefer tearing the tofu into uneven chunks instead of cutting perfect cubes. You get more craggly edges, which means more surface area to get golden brown and crispy. It's like tofu with character.

Ingredients you’ll need

You can find the complete recipe with measurements in the recipe card below.

For the Tofu:

  • Super firm tofu, torn into bite-sized chunks
  • Corn starch
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Black pepper

For the Sauce:

  • Ketchup
  • Low sodium soy sauce (tamari sauce for gluten-free)
  • Pure maple syrup (or brown sugar, if you’re out)
  • Rice vinegar
  • Sesame seeds, for topping

Optional Toppings:

  • Chopped green onions
  • Fresh cilantro
  • A sprinkle of red pepper flakes if you want it spicier

How to make crispy sticky sesame tofu

  1. Press the Tofu: If your tofu isn't super firm, you'll want to press the tofu. Use a tofu press or wrap it in layers of paper towels, place it on a cutting board, and weigh it down with a heavy book. Let it press for at least 15-30 minutes to remove the excess liquid.
  2. Coat the Tofu: Tear the tofu into bite-sized chunks (this gives a more rustic, crunchy tofu vibe). Add it to a large zip-top bag or large bowl with the cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper. Shake or toss until the tofu is well coated.
  3. Bake or Air Fry: Preheat your oven to 370°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the tofu in a single layer. Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway. Air fryer option: Cook at 370°F for 10-15 minutes. Either way, aim for that beautiful golden brown crispiness
  4. Make the Sauce: Place a non-stick pan or large skillet over medium heat once the tofu is finished crisping. Add the sauce ingredients (ketchup, soy sauce, maple syrup, and rice vinegar). Stir it all up and let it bubble into a slightly thick, sweet, sticky sauce. If it gets too thick, you can add a splash of water or a cornstarch slurry (1 teaspoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water) for more body.
  5. Toss It All Together: Toss the crispy tofu into the sauce. Stir gently over medium-high heat for a couple of minutes until all the tofu pieces are beautifully coated. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

How to serve this sticky sesame tofu

This tofu is killer on its own, but if you want to make it a full meal:

  • Serve it over white rice, brown rice, or jasmine rice
  • Add steamed broccoli, bok choy, or your fave stir-fried veggies
  • Use it as the star protein in Buddha bowls
  • Pile it on noodles with extra sticky glaze and a side of attitude

Tips & tricks for the best sticky sesame tofu

  • First time making crispy tofu? Don't worry if it's not perfect. Tofu is forgiving, unlike most exes. 😁
  • Store leftover tofu in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to crisp it up again.
  • Want even more flavor? Add grated fresh garlic, fresh ginger, or a pinch of five spice to the sauce next time.
  • Feel free to try this recipe with my homemade General Tso Sauce or Teriyaki Sauce

Yet another tasty recipe tried from your collection Shane thank you. I’m coeliac so it’s hard to find a meal that feels like a weekend Chinese takeaway treat but I made this last night and doubled the sauce mixture and added green beans broccoli and corn to the sauce with the crispy tofu and went heavy on the paprika and it was delicious.
We love your recipes so much here in the UK and we refer to them as Shane nights when we eat them!
My husband isn’t completely plant based (yet!) but your recipes have been so tasty I think I’m finally converting him and the sticky tofu went down a treat with us both so thanks! Keep up the great work it’s very much appreciated.

Weird question I know, but can you think of a substitute for ketchup. I feed someone who can’t eat tomatoes.

Crushed Pineapple, soy sauce, ginger and the cornstarch slurry is really good….or pureed roasted red pepper instead of ketchup.

This was amazing. I wasn’t feeling something too heavy so I skipped the rice and added some broccoli, red and yellow pepper and shredded carrots to it so I doubled the sauce. It was perfect! Thank you!

We really like this recipe in our home. If I don’t have tofu on hand, I just substitute some chickpeas which are equally as delicious. So fast, easy, and tasty. Thank you!

Delicious! And so easy! I cut the black pepper in half to be cautious since I cook for others with a lower tolerance for spicy.
BTW – the directions call for onion powder but it is not in the ingredients. Is it 1 teaspoon of onion powder?

Made this yesterday and it was excellent. Fast to make, reheats well, and super versatile. We made it with the magic-yam noodles and broccoli, doubling the sauce recipe, and it was perfect. Thanks Shane, another great one.

This tofu recipe is so delicious. I have never actually made air fried tofu before, and this one is a sure winner. My husband doesn’t like tofu, and he actually agreed that the sauce was good even if he wasn’t used to the texture of tofu. Next time I’ll try it without the black pepper to see if my daughter thinks it’s less spicy.

Definitely the best tofu I have ever made. I used Trader Joe’s sprouted tofu which I had frozen and thawed. Truly awesome. Thanks for the recipe!y

Definitely 5 stars, as I ate half of it right out of the skillet before it made it to the table.

I made this last night, exactly as the recipe said, except that I doubled the sauce so that it would be more saucy. Served it with a gourmet rice blend and steamed green beans. It was fast, easy, economical, and super delicious. This is going to stay in my rotation. Thank you, Shane.
