How to make vegan sweet potato brownies
All you have to do is follow these simple steps to create your own batch of flourless, gluten-free, vegan sweet potato brownies:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8 inch brownie pan or baking dish with parchment paper. If you want thicker brownies use a smaller pan.
- Add the sweet potato (or sweet potato puree), peanut butter, maple syrup, and cocoa powder to a food processor. Blend until the batter is smooth and the ingredients are well incorporated. The batter should be thick and fudgy.
- If using, fold in the dark chocolate chips, reserving a few for topping if desired.
- Transfer the brownie batter to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips on top if you set some aside.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges start to pull away from the sides of the pan and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs. You’ll likely have no crumbs.
- Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes before lifting them out using the parchment paper.
- Cut into squares and enjoy your delicious, fudgy vegan sweet potato brownies!
NOTE: If you don’t have a food processor you can mash the sweet potato in a large bowl then add the remaining ingredients. Mix until the ingredients are smooth and well incorporated.

Top Tips
You can make sure your vegan sweet potato brownies turn out perfectly every time with these helpful tips!
- Don’t Overbake: These brownies are meant to be fudgy. It’s better to slightly underbake than overbake, as they’ll continue to set as they cool.
- Use Room Temperature Ingredients: This helps everything mix together more smoothly, resulting in a better texture.
- Smooth Sweet Potato: For the best texture, ensure your mashed sweet potato or sweet potato puree is smooth and lump-free. You can use a food processor or high-speed blender for ultra-smooth results.
- Adjust Sweetness: If you prefer sweeter brownies, you can add an extra tablespoon of pure maple syrup or a few drops of liquid stevia.
- Cool Completely: For the best texture and easy cutting, allow the brownies to cool completely before slicing.

Storage instructions
Keep your vegan sweet potato brownies fresh and delicious with these storage tips:
- Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Refrigerator: Keep in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 5 days. The cool temperature will make them even fudgier!
- Freezer: Wrap individual brownies in parchment paper and store in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

Recipe variations
Want to mix things up? Try these exciting variations on your 4-ingredient vegan sweet potato brownies:
- Nutty Delight: Add ¼ cup of chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter for extra crunch.
- Chocolate Drizzle: Melt some vegan chocolate chips and drizzle it over the brownies before enjoying! (As shown in the photos)
- Almond Butter Alternative: Replace peanut butter with almond butter or cashew butter for a different flavor profile.
- Sunflower Seed Butter: Make these brownies nut-free by using sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter.
- Spice It Up: I love adding some of my DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix. But, you can also try a pinch of cinnamon or even a dash of espresso powder to enhance the chocolate flavor.
- Sea Salt Topping: Sprinkle some flaky sea salt on top of the brownies before baking for a delicious sweet-salty contrast.

The health benefits of sweet potato brownies
These vegan sweet potato brownies aren’t just delicious - they’re packed with nutrients too! Here’s why you can feel good about indulging:
- Vitamin A Powerhouse: Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A, supporting eye health and immune function.
- Fiber-Rich: Sweet potatoes provide dietary fiber, promoting digestive health and helping you feel satisfied.
- Antioxidant Boost: Both sweet potatoes and cocoa powder are high in antioxidants, which help protect your cells from damage.
- Healthy Fats: The peanut butter (or alternative nut/seed butter) provides heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
- Lower in Sugar: By using the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes and minimal added sweeteners, these brownies have less sugar than traditional recipes.

Why these brownies are perfect for everyone
These 4-ingredient vegan sweet potato brownies aren’t just delicious but warmly welcoming. Here’s why they’re perfect for various dietary needs:
- Vegan-Friendly: Made entirely with plant-based ingredients, these brownies are perfect for those wanting to reduce their animal intake.
- Gluten-Free: With no flour or gluten-containing ingredients, these brownies are safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities.
- Flourless: Perfect for those following grain-free diets or looking to reduce their carbohydrate intake.
- Easily Adaptable: Can be made nut-free by using sunflower seed butter, making them school-friendly and allergy-safe.
- Whole Food Based: Made primarily with whole food ingredients, these brownies are a healthier alternative to processed desserts.
Troubleshooting your vegan sweet potato brownies
Even with a simple recipe, sometimes things don’t go as planned. Here are some common issues and how to fix them:
- Brownies are too dry: This usually means they’ve been overbaked. Next time, check them a few minutes earlier. Remember, they’ll continue to set as they cool.
- Brownies are too wet: If your brownies are undercooked, you can put them back in the oven for a few more minutes. If they’re cooled already, try refrigerating them to firm up.
- Brownies stick to the pan: Always use parchment paper to line your baking pan. It makes removal and cleanup a breeze!
- Brownies lack chocolate flavor: Try using a higher quality cocoa powder or adding more chocolate chips to the batter.
- Brownies are too sweet: Reduce the maple syrup slightly in your next batch, or use a more bitter cocoa powder to balance the sweetness.

This was a hit! So fudgy and decadent! Thanks for another awesome recipe!
How should I cook the sweet potato? Boil or bake?
Whatever is easiest for you. It doesn’t matter. I usually microwave it.
Thanks for another amazing recipe. What are your thoughts on using carob powder in place of the cacao or cocoa?
Incredibly fast and easy to make. The taste and texture does not disappoint. And healthy too. What more could you ask for?
I love this recipe. I did add some jalapeño powder and a dash of cinnamon because I could not help myself. I love jalapeño and chocolate. Was sooooo good. I did find I used an 8/4 loaf pan for the baking and they came out perfect. This is a keeper.
Awesome!!! Love the additions!
The brownies turned out great!
I was skeptical because of the lack of flour and baking soda, but trust the recipe, especially the cooling time, and it will work!
I cooked a sweet potato until very soft and mashed it with a fork which already made it a smooth purée. So, I only stirred the other ingredients in with a spoon – I didn’t need a food processor to make a homogenous dough.
(Tasted great before baking, too!)
Thanks, Shane, for sharing!
Wow, thank you so much!
Wow! The flavor of these brownies took me back to my childhood and my grandmother’s brownies that had tons of butter and white flour and sugar. And that was even before I baked them! I added vanilla and cinnamon, vegan chocolate chips throughout and a few on top.
I used about 1/8 cup of maple syrup.
Thank you Shane!
Thank you, Jodi!
What is the fudgy sauce you have on top of the brownies. I am planning on making these and would like to know what the sauce is.
Love your recipes,
Cheree’ Smith
