Summer brings the heat here in the South, but with it also comes some pretty delicious desserts and treats.
The “go-to” for most is good old-fashioned ice cream. But, for those of us wanting to keep it healthy, delicious and plant-based, these frozen chocolate covered banana pops are amazing! I love all things chocolate, it’s a weakness and happily admit it.
So, after my homemade peanut butter eggs and no-bake chocolate peanut butter pie frozen chocolate covered bananas just seemed like a no-brainer. Honestly, I can’t believe I waited this late in the game to make these bad boys.
Alright, no more waiting, let’s do this! BRING IT ON SUMMER!!!

Ingredients
Unless you’re using toppings you only need two ingredients to make these frozen chocolate covered bananas. This is a much healthier alternative to ice cream when the hotter months of summer hit.
- Bananas (ripe but firm)
- Dark chocolate chips, dairy-free
- Toppings of your choice (chopped pecans, hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios, shredded coconut, etc.)
See the recipe card down below for a detailed list of ingredients and amounts.
How To Make Frozen Chocoalte Covered Bananas
If you’re looking for a healthy and delicious snack that satisfies your sweet tooth, frozen chocolate covered bananas are a great option. They’re easy to make, require only 2 ingredients, and can be customized to suit your taste. Here’s how to make them:
Once the bananas are frozen, prepare the chocolate coating by melting the chocolate in a microwave-safe boil or use a double boiler.
Dip the frozen bananas into the chocolate, using a spoon to help coat them evenly. If you’re adding toppings, sprinkle them onto the chocolate while it’s still wet. You can use chopped nuts, shredded coconut, sprinkles, or any other toppings you like.
Place the chocolate-covered bananas back on the parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is set.
ENJOY!
Hint: If you don’t have popsicle sticks you can use wooden skewers. But, make sure the bananas are completely frozen before dipping them in chocolate because round skewers tend to slide out more easily.
Chocolate-covered Bananas Variations
These delicious chocolate covered banana pops are way more versatile than you may realize. Here are a few ideas for adding flavor, and texture, and even changing the size.
- Flavor: For an extra flavor boost, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract, peppermint, almond, orange, or a pinch of flaky sea salt to the melted chocolate. But, be careful, extracts can be strong and you don’t want to add too much.
- Chocolate banana bites: To make the bananas easier to dip, you can cut them into smaller chunks and use toothpicks instead of popsicle sticks.
- Toppings: Experiment with different toppings, such as crushed pretzels, dried fruit, or a drizzle of peanut butter.

Equipment
Remember, the equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. The most important part of this recipe is melting the chocolate. For me, there are only two ways to do this: double boiler and microwave.
Personally, I prefer the double boiler because it’s hard to burn the chocolate that way. But, a glass mixing bowl that is microwave-safe works as well.
What are the best ways to melt chocolate?
Melting chocolate can be easily burned. But, here are a few simple methods to ensure that doesn’t happen to you.
Double boiler: you can purchase a double boiler or do use a DIY setup. Here’s how you do it:
- Place a saucepan on the stove, add 1-2 inches of water, and place a dry, shallow, heat-safe glass mixing bowl over the saucepan. The outer edge of the mixing bowl should touch the upper edge of the saucepan so it can create a “seal” and trap steam inside the saucepan. Make sure the water in the pan isn’t touching the bottom of the mixing bowl.
- Add chocolate to the mixing bowl, turn on the stove to medium heat, and as the water begins to simmer and release steam, the steam will heat the chocolate and the chocolate will begin to melt. As the chocolate melts, constantly stir with a rubber spatula until all of the chocolate has melted.
Microwave: Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
Stovetop: This is my least favorite because you really have to babysit the chocolate. But, it is still fairly simple. Place a saucepan on the stove, add the chocolate, and warm the chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly, until the chocolate is smooth.
How to store frozen chocolate-covered bananas
Chocolate-covered bananas are great for making ahead because they can be frozen. Once the chocolate is set wrap the bananas individually in plastic wrap and store them in the freezer for up to 2 months.
Top tip
- You can use any vegan chocolate, but for a healthier option, try using dairy-free dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids.
- If you’re using any toppings it’s best to sprinkle them over the chocolate-covered bananas instead of rolling them in the toppings. The melted chocolate tends to come off in clumps.
- DO NOT let the chocolate get wet! It will cause the hot chocolate to clump up and not be as smooth.

I used to visit Disneyland often and one of the first things I’d do is get a frozen chocolate-covered banana. I haven’t made them at home in years. Thanks so much for the reminder! I will be making them soon!
Thanks, Rebekah! I hope you enjoy them.
