What’s Blackening Seasoning

Blackening seasoning is a mixture of different spices and herbs that are very similar to Cajun and Creole seasoning.

It’s most commonly used on meats like fish and chicken. But, as you will soon see, it breathes new life into your veggies, tofu, and anything else you can think to put it on.

If you’ve never used this before you’ll soon wonder how you lived without it.

What Is Blackening Seasoning Made Of?

Blackened seasoning is just a simple mixture of spices and herbs. And, more than likely you have all the ingredients sitting in your spice drawer or cabinet.

Here’s what you’ll need…

  • Smoked Paprika
  • Onion & Garlic Powder
  • Dried Thyme
  • Dried Oregano
  • Black Pepper
  • Salt
  • Cayenne

I LOVE spicy food so that’s why I’ve included the cayenne. But, if you’re sensitive to heat simply reduce the amount or remove it completely from the recipe.

How To Use Blackened Seasoning

I love covering tofu with this seasoning and either grilling or cooking it in a cast iron skillet. It’s absolutely amazing! And, it’s also great for simply seasoning your food after its cooked.

Try this recipe on these dishes to increase the depth and add flavor. It makes food POP!

Delicious and I like that there is less salt in recipe than some other blackened seasonings

I just tried this seasoning for the first time. It took me immediately back to the first time I had tasted blackened foods. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. I did sub basil in for the oregano. I did add three teaspoons of sea salt and also added one teaspoon of allspice. We like to use this for blackened mahi-mahi or chicken cutlet sandwiches. Super tasty.

Hi Shane! This looks awesome. I am allergic to oregano, is there a good spice to substitute it with?

    Thanks

Marjoram is a good sub. Basil is also good as well.

Thank you for this recipe! I had one written down that I think accidentally got thrown away. I used it on soy curls and would add it to wfpb fettuccine alfredo! Now I can use your recipe! So so excited!!! Your recipes have never failed me!
