MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: I will never again buy chili powder at the grocery store!

Making your own homemade chili powder spice mix is so easy. You essentially toss a few savory spices from your pantry into a bowl and mix. No roasting peppers in a hot pan, chopping, or deseeding anything. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

This homemade chili seasoning is super versatile. You can make it as spicy or mild as you want, not to mention cutting back or eliminating ingredients like salt if needed. And, it tastes much better than anything that’s been sitting on a shelf in a packet.

This delicious chili powder is perfect for your favorite chili recipe. It’s also great on potatoes, vegetables, or livening up veggie burgers before you grill.

Chili Powder Ingredients

A handful of spices are all you need to make this simple and cheap homemade chili powder.

  • Paprika: a mellow ingredient with a hint of sweetness. It adds flavor and bright red color to recipes.
  • Garlic Powder: works in any recipe calling for garlic. You get the flavor without all the mess.
  • Onion Powder: perfect for adding rich onion flavor throughout any recipe.
  • Oregano: you usually see this in Italian dishes but it’s also quite common in Mexican dishes. Oregano adds an earthy flavor to recipes.
  • Cumin: accentuates any sweetness that’s found in recipes. It’s a must-have for enhancing savory flavors.
  • Smoked Paprika: unlike regular paprika, it has a smoky undertone made from uncharred, dried peppers. Smoked paprika adds an extra layer of complexity to your dishes by giving it a delicious earthy flavor that enhances the taste as well as the aroma.
  • Cayenne: all you need is a pinch to add sweet and spicy heat to this spice mix.
  • Salt: completely optional in this recipe. I would suggest making the chili powder without it then taste and season.

I added about 1/4 tsp Hungarian hot paprika.
We’ll see how that turns out. When I make chili, I always put 1/4 cup chili powder no less.

I’m about to start a low-iodine diet as a step in my cancer treatment and it’s been a bit discouraging to find out that iodine is in nearly EVERYTHING! I have to have everything be salt-free or made with kosher salt, so finding a recipe for a chili powder that I can add my own salt to is a lifesaver! I never knew storebought chili powder had salt in it, or even thought about it. Thank you so much!!!

P.S. did you blend your chili powder? Yours looks much smoother than mine. Mine has visible oregano in it and yours doesn’t seem to. Just wondering! Thanks again 🙂

The recipe has paprika twice but no chili powder. Is it correct?

Yes, one is smoked paprika and the other is regular paprika.
