Creamy Chocolate Tahini Shake (Vegan)

This Chocolate Tahini Shake is rich, creamy, and made with just 7 wholesome ingredients. Naturally sweetened, and full of healthy fats and fiber, this decadent vegan milkshake is perfect for breakfast, dessert, or right after your workout.

Are you looking for a delicious and healthy vegan shake recipe? Well, this chocolate tahini shake is it! Rich, creamy, and loaded with nutrients, this nutrient-filled shake is the perfect way to start your day or refuel after a workout.

This recipe was inspired by a delicious vanilla tahini shake created by Dana over at Minimalist Baker. And, since I never miss an opportunity to put tahini in anything, I just had to create my own version. But, one of the biggest differences is she used cauliflower in place of bananas. I know it sounds crazy, but it works!

Perfect as a dessert or post-workout drink, this easy 7-ingredient shake is a much healthier option than some store-bought drinks at those over-priced smoothie places. And, best of all it doesn’t taste healthy.

What is tahini?

Tahini is a popular middle-eastern condiment made with ground sesame seeds. It’s a key ingredient in hummus, baba ganoush, and halva. But, it’s also a very good replacement for nut butter when blended with maple syrup, honey, or dates.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This creamy chocolate tahini shake is an easy, protein-packed drink based on tahini, cocoa, banana, non-dairy milk, and vanilla. Here’s what you’ll need…

  • unsweetened almond milk (or your favorite non-dairy milk)
  • frozen banana
  • tahini
  • Medjool dates
  • cocoa powder or cacao powder
  • pure vanilla extract
  • cinnamon (optional)
  • ice cubes

See the recipe card below the post for precise quantities and instructions.

How To Make Chocolate Tahini Shake

This vegan chocolate tahini shake tastes like a creamy, decadent milkshake made with regular ice cream. It takes less than 10 minutes to make and is full of healthy ingredients.

Combine all of the ingredients in a high-speed blender.

Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Pour into a glass and top with cacao nibs, frozen cherries, or a light dusting with some cocoa powder.

Enjoy!

Note: yes, this is a WFPB shake, but enjoy it sparingly. If you are trying to lose weight this is probably not the best recipe for you.

Variations

Giving the visitor ideas on how they can change this recipe to better suit their dinner guests or their cultural cuisine, is a great way to increase the chances they make the recipe

  • Avocado – not a fan of tahini but want the healthy fats? Try adding some chopped avocado in its place. It blends nice and smooth and is essentially flavorless.
  • Frozen Fruit – a great way of adding flavor is by tossing in some of your favorite frozen fruit. My favorites are frozen cherries, blueberries, and raspberries.
  • Caramel – drizzle the top with some of my easy date caramel for added beauty and sweetness.
  • Vegan Whipped Cream: if this is one of those “enjoy sparingly” treats then you should really enjoy it. I would say make a batch of my coconut whipped cream and a big ole dollop before serving.

Equipment

The most important piece of equipment you need to make this chocolate tahini shake is a good blender. I LOVE my Vitamix and yes, it is worth every penny I paid for it. But, I also realize it is expensive.

So, here are a couple of less-expensive options that are great:

  • Ninja TWISTi Blender Duo
  • BioloMix Heavy Duty Blender
  • Hamilton Beach Wave Crusher

Storage

You should only make this tahini chocolate shake when you plan on enjoying it in one sitting because it’s best when fresh. If you don’t finish it store any leftover shake in the fridge in a jar with a lid for 1 day.

And, no, this recipe is not freezer friendly.

Top tips

  • Use ripe bananas for the sweetest flavor.
  • This recipe is high in fat! Healthy fats, but still fat. If you are trying to lose weight omit the tahini. If you are active and workout a lot, this is a good way to get in your calories and protein.
  • If you don’t have dates use ¼ cup of maple syrup.
  • For an extra protein boost, add a scoop of your favorite vegan protein powder.
  • You can also substitute the almond milk with coconut milk, soy milk, oat milk, or any other non-dairy milk of your choice.
  • Adjust the amount of tahini and cocoa powder to your liking. If you prefer a stronger tahini flavor, add more tahini. If you prefer a richer chocolate flavor, add more cocoa powder. If you just hate the tahini, leave it out altogether.

Health Benefits of Chocolate Tahini Shake

This chocolate tahini shake is not only delicious but also loaded with health benefits.

  • Tahini is a good source of healthy fats, protein, and minerals such as iron, magnesium, and calcium. It also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Cocoa powder is rich in flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants that can help protect against heart disease, cancer, and other chronic conditions. It also contains compounds that can improve brain function, mood, and blood pressure.
  • Bananas are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals like potassium, and can help regulate digestion, lower blood pressure, and boost energy levels.

Shane, this creamy tahini chocolate shake is so delicious. I used soy milk instead of almond milk, which was much lower in sodium (85 mg), and there was no other added sodium. I also used carob powder rather than chocolate. Carob powder has a natural sweetness. The banana could not be tasted. This shake will be a regular treat in my family. Thank you, Shane, for this excellent recipe.

I stopped reading my e-mails and went to make this immediately…a 930 AM! I made the recipe as written with a couple of swaps. While I had cocoa powder, I decided to use my Double Chocolate Crio Bru (ground in a spice grinder). I used two heaping tablespoons of date paste. I did not have any ice cubes. So…it is delicious! Thick and frothy even without the ice cubes. I did find the banana a little flavor forward, but that is fine. I love using date paste (just dates and water) in recipes because the pulverization is already done. The tahini flavor did not come to the forefront, so next time I may use a little more or try almond or peanut butter instead for a different flavor. Will be making this again…and again! Thanks!

Can’t wait to try this! About how many deglet dates you would use in place of medjool dates?
