If you’re a fan of tangy, creamy sauces with a bit of kick, this vegan Mississippi comeback sauce is as good as it gets. It’s creamy, tangy, full of flavor, and provides just the right amount of kick. Oil-free and gluten-free.
Ladies and gentlemen, your new favorite condiment – it’s Mississippi Comeback Sauce! Mayo who?
Think of this sauce as a cross between mayonnaise, ketchup, Thousand Island dressing, and hot sauce. Yeah, that’s right. It’s the holy quad of sauces.
But, one problem – the original recipe is not vegan or remotely healthy. So, I wanted to create a healthy plant-based version that retained all the flavor from the original without all of the bad. Verdict? You be the judge but I think this recipe is pretty freaking awesome.
One of the things that make comeback sauce so good, besides the flavor, is its versatility. It’s way more than just some glorified fry sauce. Please. (but, it is pretty awesome with sweet potato fries…just sayin’)
You can use it as a dip, dressing, or marinade. It’s perfect for adding flavor to so many dishes, from sandwiches and veggie burgers to grilled tofu and roasted vegetables. And, just wait until you use it as a salad dressing. Honestly, I put that $#!T on everything!
Are you ready? Because I’m about to show you how to make Mississippi comeback sauce.

Mississippi Comeback Sauce Recipe
Where did it come from and just how did originate? Comeback sauce was created not far from my hometown in Jackson, Mississippi. Originally, it was the house dressing served at a Greek restaurant called The Rotisserie. The rest, as they say, is history. And, now, you’ll find it in most Mississippi restaurants.
Many folks say it reminds them of a remoulade sauce but I think that’s an insult to comeback sauce.
Why Is It Called Comeback Sauce?
If you’ve ever been to Mississippi you know we don’t say “goodbye” or “see you later.” Anytime you leave someone’s house, restaurant, or any other establishment we say, “y’all comeback!”
So, just remember that if you serve this sauce when you have guests over at your house you don’t want to hang around. This tasty sauce is a guarantee they’ll show back up or “come back.” (see what I did there?)
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Vegan Mayonnaise: use my homemade cashew mayonnaise to keep it healthy and oil-free. If nuts aren’t your friend my tofu mayonnaise is great.
- Ketchup: provides a tomato base with an element of sweetness that offsets and balances out the heat.
- Chili Sauce: I prefer using Sriracha sauce because it doesn’t contain high-fructose corn syrup like Heinz chili sauce and most other brands. But, any type of chili sauce will work.
- Worcestershire Sauce:
- Dijon Mustard: it has a tangy, sharp, and strong flavor with a bit of spice.
- Horseradish (optional): Horseradish is a white root vegetable that’s closely related to mustard and wasabi. Its pungent taste and odor and a spicy kick to any dish. You don’t need this to make the recipe work but I just LOVE the depth of flavor it adds.
- Apple Cider Vinegar:
- Seasonings: garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper.
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: add a teaspoon or two of Tobasco sauce or your favorite hot sauce for even more of a spicy kick.
How To Make Mississippi Comeback Sauce
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and apple cider vinegar. Whisk everything together until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Add the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Mix well, making sure all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings as needed. If you like your sauce spicy, you can add a few dashes of hot sauce to the mix.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the sauce for at least an hour to let the flavors meld together.
- Once the sauce has chilled and the flavors have had time to develop, give it a quick stir and taste it again. Adjust any of the seasonings as needed to fit your taste, then serve the sauce alongside your favorite dishes.
What Do You Use Mississippi Comeback Sauce For?
Well, that really is up to you. It’s perfect for replacing both mayo and ketchup, but it goes far beyond just those two basic condiments. Here are a few suggestions…
- baked french fries
- crunchy baked onion rings
- drizzle it over roasted veggies
- the perfect sandwich spread
- a rich marinade for grilled tofu
- it’s an excellent salad dressing
Storage
Pour any leftover Mississippi Comeback into a jar or airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. This cashew mayo will thicken as it sits so thin it out with a little water or lemon juice.

Can I use the tofu mayo instead of the cashew mayo? Thank you!
Yes, absolutely!
Didn’t want mayo and this sauce to have to use up in a week. Only me using. I decided to just use a cup of silken tofu and up the spices a bit to what would be included in mayo. Threw it all in a small food processor and turned out great. Will be doing this again and again. Love your recipes Shane.

I see horseradish listed in the ingredients but not seen in the actual recipe? How much do we use? Ty Shane. It looks delicious
Hi, Sheri! Sorry about that. It is an optional ingredient but if you use it, the amount is 1/2 teaspoon. I went back in to edit. You can use prepared or fresh.
Not being an American, I had never heard of this sauce. It does look interesting, though. I’ll try it soon
How much horseradish? Do you use fresh or prepared? Going to try this on the weekend!! Thanks for all your recipes – they don’t disappoint!
